Joe Mifsud

Joe has over 30 years experience in environmental and agricultural science. He has worked as a scientist and manager in all facets of the mining, energy and agriculture industries taking on large and difficult assignments.
Joe is a specialist environmental advisor to the World Bank for the remediation and closure of legacy mines and smelters in the Zambian Copperbelt and more recently on Mine Closure in Shanxi, China and environmental protection for new mining initiatives in Bougainville.

Dr Stephen Clarke provides leadership to our Research & Development team. He oversees our ongoing in research in sustainable chemistry and product development.
Prior to joining COOE Stephen and his team at the University of South Australia helped us develop an epoxy resin made from bio-diesel waste. He is the first Australian scientist on the International Advisory Board of the Asian Silicon Society, is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

As the General Manager Kate manages both business development and the Professional Hire arm of the company. Kate is experienced in several fields of environmental science, project management and environmental approvals.
She has prepared several EPBC Referrals, contributed to many Environmental Impact Assessments, and carried out compliance reviews, monitoring and reporting in accordance with conditional licences.

Bethany has more than 20 years’ experience within the mining and exploration industry. Completing her Honours for Newmont, she has project managed for companies exploring for gold, uranium, iron ore, nickel, base metals and diamonds across Australia.
Bethany has a comprehensive knowledge of various state legislations with experience in technical and statutory reporting across geological, environmental, mining approval submissions, tenure management, heritage, safety and radiation protocols.

Katie is an environmental professional with over 17 years’ experience working across consulting, and operational environmental roles across Australia. Katie has experience in contaminated sites & ASS assessment, as well as operational environmental management experience in a variety of industries.
Katie’s key expertise is in soil and water chemistry, and design of monitoring programs. Katie has a BSc Hons in Chemistry and Microbiology and is a chartered chemist.

She has coordinated Environmental Improvement Plans for engineering projects and has conducted Environmental Auditing, Sustainable Development planning, Life Cycle Analysis, and Sustainability & Environmental Impact Assessments

Lisa has a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Marine Biology and Ecology. Her work with COOE has included ecological desktop reviews, microbat acoustic detection, targeted search for Northern Quoll, ground truthing of regional ecosystems, EVNT flora surveys and fauna habitat assessments, bird counts and use of pitfall traps. Lisa champions the review and update of COOE’s management system and digital marketing.

Nathan has a PhD in marine ecology and a BSc (Hons) in environmental management. With over 10 years’ experience in marine research and monitoring, Nathan is experienced with nearshore, intertidal and marine monitoring, impact/compliance assessments, experimental design, statistical analysis and data interpretation, report writing, and presentations.

Sharon has 21 years’ experience in all aspects of ecology, conservation and threatened species research, monitoring, management, and impact assessment and amelioration. Her has included fish stocks/community structure and impact assessments e.g. of fisheries, mariculture, marine parks, marine heatwaves.
Sharon has worked in Marine and terrestrial Parks Ranger positions which involved public interaction, education and compliance experience and she also taught and supervised staff and volunteers.

Maylene is an experienced scientist with a PhD from the University of Adelaide in marine biology. She specialises in Environmental Impact Assessment/Monitoring and Natural Resource Management.
Maylene has robust database development and management skills, combined with quantitative analysis of data and reporting. Maylene has recently used COOE's facility and equipment for a year-long environmental monitoring project of marine macroinvertebrates.

David has worked with COOE on numerous projects including the Olympic Dam Mine Expansion EIS, the Rex Hillside Project in the Upper Gulf St Vincent, marine monitoring programs at Port Pirie for Nyrstar, and Port Bonython for Santos Ltd.

James is a marine biologist and SCUBA diver specialising in marine fauna. James has undertaken numerous reef and marine park surveys in South Australia and has worked on several marine impact assessment projects with COOE. 
Work James has undertaken with COOE includes the Rex Hillside Project in the Upper Gulf St. Vincent, Robe Marina study, the Port Pirie Boat Ramp dredging study, the BHP Billiton Whyalla desalination project and the 5 year marine monitoring program for Nyrstar in Port Pirie.

Pancho is a marine sciences researcher with over three decades experience in freshwater, estuarine, and coastal to offshore habitats in temperate and sub-tropical Australia, and in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Pancho led the COOE team in a three year larvae plankton monitoring program undertaken by COOE to evaluate the potential impacts on fisheries of the proposed desalination plant for the BHP Olympic Dam Expansion Project.

Ian has a doctorate in environmental contamination, specialising in investigation of contaminated sediments, and 28 years post-doctoral experience in the investigation, ecological risk assessment and management of environmental pollution. Dr Irvine has also carried out many consultancies in the Asia-Pacific region for the World Bank, ADB and other international agencies. Ian worked in association with COOE in developing a major EIS for the Cleanup of Marcopper Tailings Spill in the Philippines.

Christopher has worked with COOE on stygofauna surveys in central South Australia.

David has an extensive employment history in State Government environmental departments (WA, SA, NT and Tas) since 1980, including the positions of Senior Ranger, Senior Field Officer, Biologist, Survey and Research Coordinator and Technical Supervisor. He has experience in land management, animal care, revegetation, fauna survey design, logistics, data assessment and reporting, integrated pest management, field team management, and threatened fauna management.

Fanie has spent more than 30 years researching, teaching and consulting in the field of dendrology, ecology and plant taxonomy. Fanie has completed more than 190 major ecological surveys for a broad range of stakeholders including governments, mining companies, environmental managers, landscape architects, developers, universities and the Department of Defence. He has conducted surveys in Southern Africa, Israel, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Bali, Mongolia, Australia and Lord Howe Island.

Bob has worked as an honorary botanist with the State Herbarium at the Adelaide Botanical Gardens since 1976, contributing to various issues of the Flora of South Australia and regular census publications of South Australian vascular plants.

Bob has also published over a hundred scientific papers in journals such as the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens from 1976 to the most recent issue in 2010 and also in the South Australian Naturalist, the Orchadian, Flora of Victoria and others.

Lindy has extensive field experience throughout South Australia and western Victoria in both local and remote areas, such as Prominent Hill and Peculiar Knob in the far north of SA, Port Paterson near Port Augusta, throughout the Adelaide Hills, the Lower Lakes, Eyre Peninsula, Hawker in the Flinders Ranges, Paringa-Loxton DrBypass, Renmark, Murray Bridge and urban locations.

He has completed Environmental Impact Assessments, Construction Environmental Management Plans, worked with regulatory agencies (EPA, NGER), conducted environmental investigation, inspections and audits and prepared environmental approval applications.
